What to Know Before Digging in Montrose

Much of the Uncompahgre Valley sits on soil weathered from Mancos shale, a clay that expands when it gets wet and shrinks as it dries. Footings, slabs, and driveways built on it need careful prep, including solid compaction and grading that keeps water from soaking in near the structure.
